Dr. Richard Strabbing of Michigan ENT & Allergy Specialists embraced balloon sinus surgery early on because the risks were low and the success rate for patients was high.In the procedure, a tiny balloon is inserted into the patient’s sinuses, slowly inflated to open the sinus passageway, then deflated and removed.
Strabbing became a doctor to be able to help people improve their lives, and he discovered that performing balloon sinuplasty procedures was an effective way to do this.
“I was one of the forerunners for doing balloon sinuplasty in the upper Midwest,” he said. “At that time, the first case was still (performed) in the operating room. Over time, we learned to do this in the office. I personally was one of several (doctors) across the U.S. that pioneered this technology in the office.” Since those early days, he has been involved nationally in refining the anesthesia protocol to make sure patients have a pleasant experience during the procedure.
