Rhinoplasty – Functional & Cosmetic

Rhinoplasty can address concerns with the way your nose functions, the way it looks, or both. For some patients, structural problems make it difficult to breathe comfortably. Others may want to change the size, shape, symmetry, or proportions of their nose.

At Michigan ENT & Allergy Specialists, Dr. Devin Mistry and Dr. John Riley approach rhinoplasty with both nasal function and appearance in mind. We’ll take time to understand what concerns you, evaluate the structure of your nose, and develop a surgical plan based on your anatomy and goals.

You may be a candidate for rhinoplasty if you:

• Have nasal obstruction or difficulty breathing caused by structural problems
• Have nasal valve collapse or narrowing that limits airflow
• Have changes to the shape or function of your nose after an injury
• Have ongoing concerns after previous nasal surgery
• Want to change the size, shape, symmetry, bridge, or tip of your nose
• Feel that the shape or proportion of your nose is out of balance with your other facial features
• Have both functional and cosmetic concerns you’d like to address together

Not every breathing problem requires rhinoplasty. In some cases, septoplasty or another nasal procedure may be a better option. We’ll evaluate what’s causing your symptoms and explain which approach may be appropriate.

Your first step is a detailed consultation. We’ll talk about what concerns you, what you’d like to change, and whether your goals are primarily functional, cosmetic, or a combination of both.

Your evaluation may include an examination of the inside and outside of your nose, assessment of nasal airflow and structural support, photographs for surgical planning, and nasal endoscopy or imaging when needed.

If rhinoplasty is recommended, your treatment plan may involve:

• Functional rhinoplasty to reshape or support structures that contribute to nasal obstruction
• Cosmetic rhinoplasty to change the external shape, size, symmetry, bridge, or tip of the nose
• Combined functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty when breathing and appearance can be addressed during the same procedure
• Septoplasty or another nasal procedure when additional internal structures are contributing to your symptoms

Before surgery, we’ll explain the recommended approach, recovery process, potential risks, and what results are realistically possible.

After surgery, some swelling, congestion, and bruising are normal. You’ll receive instructions about caring for your nose, activity restrictions, and follow-up visits while you heal.

Rhinoplasty isn’t always about appearance. The structure of your nose helps determine how well air moves through your nasal passages. When that structure is narrowed, weakened, or altered by trauma, breathing can become more difficult.

For patients considering cosmetic rhinoplasty, careful planning is equally important. Changes to the outside of the nose can affect its underlying support and function. Our approach considers both, with the goal of maintaining or improving nasal function while creating a natural result that fits your features.

Recovery from rhinoplasty happens gradually. Swelling and congestion typically improve as your nose heals, but the final shape of your nose may continue to refine for many months.

For functional rhinoplasty, the goal is to improve airflow by correcting or supporting the structures contributing to nasal obstruction. Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on creating changes that are appropriate for your facial features and the goals discussed before surgery.

Follow-up care is an important part of the process. We’ll monitor your healing, answer questions, and let you know when it’s appropriate to return to exercise and other activities.

Because every nose — and every rhinoplasty — is different, your surgeon will give you a more specific idea of recovery and expected results based on your procedure.
